Here is a rule that would save thousands of models from years of underpaid work: never sign with any agency, studio, or manager, including us, until you have done the math on paper and the math makes sense. Not their math. Yours.
Most models never do this. They hear "we handle everything" and a percentage that sounds reasonable, and they sign. So let us do the math out loud, once, dollar by dollar, and you will never un-see it.
Follow $100 through the pipe
A fan spends $100 in your room. Where does it go?
Step one, the platform's cut. The cam site keeps roughly half of what fans spend. Fair or not, that is the price of the stage, the traffic, and the payment system. About $50 remains. This is the "model share," and everything now depends on one question: whose account does it land in?
Path A: a studio. The account is theirs, so the $50 lands with THEM. The studio then takes its own cut, commonly 60 to 80 percent of the model share, sometimes with "fines" and fees shaved off after. You walk with $10 to $15 of the original $100. Notice something else: because the account and dashboard are the studio's, you cannot even verify what the platform actually paid. Their math is whatever they say it is.
Path B: independent. Your account, your name. The $50 lands with you. All of it, verifiable in your own dashboard.
Path C: an honest agency. Your account, your name, the $50 lands with YOU first. The agency invoices its percentage afterward, under a written agreement. At a 25 percent management fee you keep $37.50, and you can check every number yourself, because the dashboard is yours.
Same fan. Same $100. Same hours of your work. $12, or $50, or $37.50. The only difference is the structure you signed.
We ran this experiment with real money
This is not theory. We bought 100 credits on a major cam platform, about $10, and tipped all 100 to one Kenyan model in her room. Then we asked her a simple question: what do you actually earn per credit?
Her answer: 2 shillings per credit.
Now do the math with us. On that platform, the model share works out to roughly 6.5 shillings per credit. She received 2. So of the money the platform paid out FOR HER WORK, someone standing between the platform and her M-Pesa kept about 70 percent. Of the roughly 1,300 shillings we actually spent on her, about 200 reached her: fifteen out of every hundred, the exact studio math from the top of this article, measured with our own wallet.
Here is the part that stays with us: she had never done this calculation. She knew her 2 shillings. She did not know the 6.5 existed, because the account, the dashboard, and the payout statement were never hers to see. That is not an accident of paperwork. That gap IS the business model.
She knew what she was given. She had no way to know what she earned. Those are different numbers, and the difference was somebody's salary.
So when does an agency actually make sense?
Simple: when what they ADD is worth more than what they TAKE. In Path C you gave up $12.50 of that $100. That trade only makes sense if the agency's marketing, training, and systems bring you meaningfully more fans, more subscribers, and more hours of your life back than $12.50 per $100 costs. Sometimes it does: a real marketing machine can multiply an audience in ways a solo creator working two jobs cannot. Sometimes it does not, and independence is the right answer. That is a real decision, and it is YOURS to make with a calculator, not theirs to make with a speech.
Path A never makes sense. There is no marketing machine on earth worth 75 percent of your income, and studios do not even run one: no socials, no brand, no fan page, because a model with her own audience is a model who can leave.
The five math questions (ask before signing anything)
- Whose name is on the account, and who holds the login? If the answer is not "you," stop here. Nothing else matters.
- Your percentage of WHAT, exactly? Of gross fan spending? Of the model share after the platform's cut? Before or after fees and fines? Make them write the base number down. Vague percentages hide entire fortunes.
- Does the money reach you first, or them first? "Platform pays you, we invoice after" is an agency. "We collect and pay you your share" is a studio, whatever they call themselves.
- What can be deducted? Fines, equipment fees, "training costs," recoupable advances. Every deductible is a lever. Get the complete list in writing or assume it is infinite.
- Can you verify every number yourself? Your own dashboard, your own payout statements. If your income can only be known by asking them, you do not have an income, you have an allowance.
Red flags and green flags, quickly
Walk away from: accounts in their name, percentages of vague bases, money that touches their hands before yours, fine systems, unaudited dashboards, pressure to sign today, and anyone who answers these questions with "trust me."
Worth considering: your name on everything, a written percentage of a defined number, invoiced after you are paid, a complete fee list, cancel-with-notice terms, and an agency that ENCOURAGES you to run this exact math on them. An honest operation loves this article. A studio hates it. That reaction is itself a test, and you should run it on us too: our answers are on the FAQ page, in writing.
For the full anatomy of where the money goes, read how much models really keep, and for what independence actually requires, start with why cam models keep so little. Then get a calculator, sit somewhere quiet, and do your math. It is the highest-paid half hour of your career.
- Get every percentage in writing
- Confirm the money is paid to you directly
- Keep the right to leave with your accounts
- Accept a cut that changes at their discretion
- Let anyone hold your passwords or payouts
- Sign anything you cannot read in plain language
Why the right column pays: A fair agency will happily put its terms in writing. Anyone who will not has told you what you needed to know.
